1.)

I like to quote this... make an “economic difference”...

Ever since I heard this term used around 2013-ish on an episode of the DevOps Cafe podcast.

I haven’t re-listened to that episode for more than a decade now. So maybe it’s time to do so soon.

But the way I remember it, the host was interviewing a wise-sounding Microsoft employee, a guy, who says he himself led the charge, for continuing development, on the cli (command line interface) for then-new (then upcoming under development) Microsoft products / OSes.

2.)

Went back and found a link to that episode:

DevOps Cafe Episode 36 | http://devopscafe.org/show/2012/11/27/devops-cafe-episode-36.html  |  "...Jeffrey Snover (Microsoft) join John and Damon for a chat..."

3.)

Next, looked at my own subsequent usage of this term in my blog:

And yep, based on a search of the occurrences of the term “economic difference”, I do use this phrase frequently over the years.

It really made an impression on me.

4.)

The way I recall persona Snover was saying, was that it’s important and/or good, to spend one’s effort and time etc., working on some project that makes an economic difference, for example one that people can buy and sell, one that people can exchange money for it; I think he was saying that it’s a positive thing to work on projects that make our earthly lives financially richer. I recall the persona Snover wasn’t pooh-poohing at all on working on noble projects, on the contrary got the feeling he was saying that is is also fine and good, to work on important, useful, ethical, high-impact, high-status projects etc etc., but that his main point was, that such a project should also make a positive monetary difference at the same time as well, such a project should make an economic difference.

5.)

Here are some past blog posts mentioning the phrase [making an] ‘economic difference’ here:

6.)

In conclusion, got to thinking again, how one idea from one podcast episode from a decade ago, stuck with me and I re-used the idea in different examples over the years. Maybe time to go back and give that one a listen, to see how similar, or how different, that it is now compared to a decade ago.
