Review: Organic Maps app for iPhone

Heard about “Organic Maps” app.

https://organicmaps.app/

1/6.) Downloading map:

Heard about it from this Youtuber’s video that said it is available on GrapheneOS:

"Maybe This Phone ISN’T Just for Criminals - Trying Graphene OS for a Month." (by "Linus Tech Tips")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDR6V5OdnYg

In the video he was saying Organic Maps can run in offline mode, not connected to any Wi-Fi / cellular.

Also was saying that Organic Maps app is based on OpenStreetMap

https://www.openstreetmap.org

So for these two reasons, I wanted to know more.

In short, I did install the app, did download some maps inside the app, and did use it to live-navigate a road route while driving.

2/6.) Offline search for far-away:

3/6.) Set “Route to/from” endpoints:

4/6.) Download 6x maps at once:

5/6.) Showing route to far-away:

6/6.) Later, driving a route:

Final notes:

Note A:)

Pretty slick, pretty nice. I’m liking this. And when using it 3x or so during driving, it navigated fine and accurately to my destination. All in offline mode (not connected to internet, just using pre-downloaded maps).

Note B.)

I saw there is a GPS track option in the Organic Maps app. Looking forward to trying that out. For hiking/driving etc.

Note C.)

Before going on a long trip, If I set start+ end points, it offers to download all the multiple maps along the route ahead of time. (see screenshot above, it can download 6x maps at once, for the whole trip from Massachusetts to Virginia)

Note D.)

It seemed to fail silently, before I enabled location services. Or else I can’t read Chinese language well so at that point I switched the interface to English language. So I guessed that was it and went and enabled location services, and then it worked fine. 100% fine with me and good to know.

Note E.)

I’m liking it that this works offline so doesn’t need internet connection. So good for driving in rural areas without cellular data service. Sweet.

Note F.)

Internet disconnected. So it feels more private. So understood then my data and location isn’t being shared to any app vendor realtime while I am traveling/using the app. Privacy for the win.

In conclusion, I’m liking Organic Maps app. For offline mode, privacy, etc.
